With the weather cooling down, my thoughts are turning to fall flavors, warm fires, and one of my favorite places in town for both: Barolo Grill. I joined friends there last week, and the restaurant—as it normally is this time of year—was packed with a convivial crowd. Even better: The fire was lit and the menu lined with October favorites.
I began with the acorn squash soufflé, a warm and savory dish that won me over with its distinct clove-based aroma. The Colorado salad was next: On this particular day (the ingredients change regularly), the dish included a round stack of ripe heirloom tomatoes, sweet butter lettuce, and crunchy corn kernels drizzled with a fragrant basil oil and served with tangy Haystack Mountain goat cheese. The house-made pappardelle, served with juicy chunks of pork belly, roasted eggplant, and a mix of red peppers, made for a comforting finale—one that paired exceedingly well with a glass of Barbera d’Alba from Bricco della Olive.

Plan Ahead: Although it’s been open for years, Barolo’s popularity never wanes. Make reservations well in advance for weekend nights—and don’t forget to request a table with a view of the fire.
