Red Gerard doesn’t have the luxury of missing his alarm these days. The 19-year-old—who slept through a wake-up call before taking gold in slopestyle at the 2018 Winter Olympics—barely has time for a Netflix binge. After a win at the 2019 U.S. Open Snowboarding Championships in March, he spent months flying to the world’s best backcountry destinations with other famous boarders to film the movie Joy, which premiered in October. He also helped design terrain parks for Copper Mountain, Utah’s Woodward Park City, and Killington Ski Resort in Vermont, all of which opened in December. The trick-friendly spaces, each dubbed Red’s Backyard, are modeled after the course he and his siblings created behind their Silverthorne home as kids. Despite the crazy schedule, Gerard says, “I’m going to try and do the same thing this year.” For Coloradans, that means a double dose of the teen this month, when he competes in the Dew Tour at Copper (February 6 to 9) and the U.S. Open at Vail Ski Resort (February 24 to 29).
