Bill Husted covers Denverite Judy Collins upcoming run at New York’s famous Cafe Carlyle, but balks at the prices ($125 per person cover, plus dinner). For the more frugal among you, here’s a tip. Get there early and sit at the bar. The cover drops to a mere $85 and you don’t have to order dinner. Best of all, you’ll likely meet some cool people and still have a great view of the stage.

It’s a tiny room — not a bad seat in the house. Here’s a shot I took last year, from just a few steps in front of the bar, of Woody Allen and his jazz band (click for larger version).

Judy is playing Tuesday through Saturday starting Jan. 22. If you’re making the trip, I’d highly suggest getting there a night early for one Woody’s regular Monday night shows.
