Mexican restaurants and tequila go hand in hand. But at El Diablo, a five-month-old, perennially packed Broadway spot, owners Jesse Morreale and Sean Yontz hope to indoctrinate diners with the knowledge that the food-friendly liquor is worthy of more than the humble shot or a margarita. The duo has started up what they hope will become monthly tequila dinners featuring a guest mixologist and a menu created by Yontz and a guest chef.

Judging from the first dinner—think crab fritters, slow-cooked Colorado lamb barbacoa, and cajeta toffee cobbler—these events will fill up fast. For $75 per person (excluding tax and tip), diners are treated to a five-course meal and at least as many cocktails. Bear in mind: These aren’t tequila tasters; they’re full-glass cocktails. (You’d be wise to designate a driver early on in the evening).

Save the date: The next dinner takes place Tuesday, February 22, with guest chef Jamey Fader and mixologist Jimmy Zanon, both of Lola.
