Our Single in the City issue is finally out—and it got some 5280 staffers reminiscing about their first dates with the one, well before the question was asked…
I was 16 years old and my best friend had just bailed on a night at the movies. So I called a guy from school. I thought it was just a friends’ thing; he thought it was a date. We grabbed Chinese food and went to see Toy Story (yes, the original). He ended up kissing me at the end of the evening. I married him—seven years later. —Lindsey B. Koehler, features editor

We met on a blind date. We were supposed to meet for drinks, but we sat on the patio where you were forced to order food. Maybe it wasn’t such a bad thing because it prolonged the date. I had plans later that evening with my girlfriends to watch Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde. He calls it a backup plan, but, really, I already had the movie scheduled before he called. Long story short: He came with me and watched the movie with my closest girlfriends. … The rest is history. —Amanda M. Faison, food editor
I met my husband the first week of college. … He got his whole freshman hall to stand outside my first floor window one night and serenade me. His roommate played the guitar. They were all holding printed song lyrics, which they sang while he hopped up on the bulkhead and came to my window with a rose. My hall-mates were in on it and made sure I was in there, with the window open, at the specified time. It was ridiculously sweet. —Julie Dugdale, senior editor
My first date with my wife: May 6, 1995, at Coors Field. I was 18; she was 17. [Recounted in a 2011 essay]: I Heart Denver. —Robert Sanchez, senior staff writer
