Sure, people from all over the world are heading to Vail and Beaver Creek during the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, taking place through February 15, but that doesn’t mean you have to. If you’d rather not deal with the traffic and the crowds, here are some other great options to get out and enjoy winter in Colorado:
Go Snow Biking | Salida
Take a guided “winter fat” ride to the ghost town of St. Elmo, or rent some 4-inch wheels to explore the Sangre de Cristos on your own.
Give One Year of 5280 for just $16.
Enjoy a Horse-drawn Carriage Ride | Fort Collins
Like days of old, snuggle under a blanket as clip-clopping horses pull your carriage through the streets of downtown Fort Collins, which was part inspiration Walt Disney’s Main Street, USA.
Run 1.5 miles in your undies on February 7—and help raise funds for the Children’s Tumor Foundation.
Take a dip in Indian Hot Springs | Idaho Springs
Simply relax in this 90-degree pool set amongst tropical vegetation. Adults (17+) can try the hotter geothermal cave baths, as well (bathing suits optional).
Try Cross-country Skiing | Peaceful Valley
Ski or snowshoe amongst snow-dusted evergreens in the Middle Saint Vrain’s tranquil valley, located 9 miles south of Allenspark along the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway.
Attend the Ice Festival | Cripple Creek
Navigate an ice maze, glide down an ice slide, and watch chainsaw-wielding artists carve glistening sculptures along the town’s main street from February 13 to 15 and 21 to 22.
