When I think of how backed up and under-resourced our courts are, I have to wonder about the judgment of some of our prosecutors. A homeless man was in jail awaiting trial on first-degree murder charges when he got busted for having cheese sandwiches in his cell and giving them to other inmates. He has since been convicted of the murder charge and is serving a life sentence in Canon City. When the guards saw him with the cheese sandwiches, they stun-gunned him. He allegedly then made a run at the officer. The prosecutors charged him with assault and let him plead guilty to the lesser crime of possessing contraband, the cheese sandwiches. The judge on Monday sentenced him to three years in jail — in addition to his life sentence. What a colossal waste of judicial resources.
