After a horse was killed in the Windsor tornado, Colorado State University’s equine reproduction laboratory stepped in and harvested her eggs, fertilizing them. The result of the charitable effort were two foals—Windsor and Tuesday, notes 9News. The story even made NBC Nightly News’ “Making a Difference” segment, which spotlights positive stories from around the nation. “Dr. Pat McCue of Colorado State University’s Equine Production Labs offered to help in an unexpected way. Using a groundbreaking process, the veterinarian and his team harvested Tuesday’s eggs and developed embryos. Neighbors offered their mares to serve as surrogate mothers,” MSNBC reports. The story is one of two segments out of Colorado up for the 2009 MSN Butterfly Award for the most popular “Making a Difference” piece.
The other is about the Same Café in Denver , a place where Brad and Libby Birky believe that everybody who walks through their restaurant’s door deserves to eat well. Same sets no prices on its menu; customers pay only what they are able or exchange an hour of work, such as busing tables or mopping floors, for food. MSN will award the person or establishment profiled in the most popular story $10,000 for the charity of their choice.
