We hope you had a grand time last night saying goodbye to 2013 and hello to 2014. If you had a little too much bubbly, though, you may be nursing your first hangover of the New Year. Well, here’s something to help: A few at-home remedies to help take the edge off your morning-after blues.
Hydrate: Drink water. Now. Lots of it. Alcohol is a diuretic and, ultimately, it dehydrates the body. Dehydration, in turn, can cause electrolyte—salts and minerals that conduct essential impulses in the body—imbalances.
That's only $1 per issue!
Go Bananas: Boozing can cause your potassium—a key electrolyte that regulates heartbeat and muscle function—levels to bottom out. If you’re struggling to get out of bed, grab a banana or two to boost your levels.
Sip: Caffeine will only dehydrate you even more. Resist the urge to pour yourself a cup-of-Joe. Instead, brew a mug of ginger or chamomile tea (both are anti-inflammatory).
Slurp: Instead of reaching for a greasy plate of bacon and eggs, try a bowl of vegetable-based soup. The broth will help hydrate you, while the vegetables are jam-packed with nutrients that will help your electrolyte levels bounce back. If you can handle it, add a little cayenne or a few jalapeno slices to the mix. The spice will help you sweat out toxins. As for me, I don’t think anything does the trick quite like a hot bowl of pho.
