On March 21st, Denver will celebrate World Down Syndrome Day by illuminating the Capitol in blue and yellow—the official colors of Down syndrome awareness. Since 2013, Denver’s Global Down Syndrome Foundation (Global) has participated in the Light the Way Campaign, where governors and their first spouses around the country light their state’s Capitol buildings as a promise to a better future for people with Down syndrome. Thanks to the biomedical research being conducted through Global—and its affiliate organizations Anna and John J. Sie Foundation and Linda Crnic Institute for Down Syndrome—this promising future seems more and more near.
Other Down syndrome and disability organizations, self-advocates, and anyone interested is invited to join in this celebration. A photo-op with Governor Hickenlooper will be available from 3:30 to 5 p.m., followed by special announcements from Global. When the sun sets, just dark enough for the hues to truly shine, the Capitol building will be lit blue and yellow.
