Aviano Coffee, Denver’s much-lauded decade-old java shop, moved into its third Mile High City home a couple of years ago. And like many of us, as we upgrade from dorm room to rental apartment to dream house, Aviano has matured and mastered its signature style. The Detroit Street location’s industrial aesthetic is a perfect combination of sleek and rugged—and, as evidenced by midmorning crowds, sets just the right stage for coffee dates and business meetings alike.

“I’d call the style ‘refined industrial,’?” says co-owner Doug Naiman, who, along with his wife and co-owner, Saadia, oversaw (and executed) much of the design work with help from David Grooms of Vega Architecture. A massive marble-and-wood topped bar anchors the space, lit from above by filament light bulbs. “We wanted the coffee to be center stage,” Doug says of the handsome combination. Reclaimed red oak and gray encaustic tiles create a soft counterpoint to the iron details throughout.
